Porn Director Andrew Blake Interview

By porn standards, Andrew Blake has been around a long damn time. Born in 1947, he started directing for Playboy before embarking upon a solo career in the early ‘90s. Blake’s part of the AVN Hall of Fame and the XRCO Hall of Fame and has directed dozens of movies. He’s seen it all, filmed it all, and met every sex/sex_fantasies/%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9Dwww.askmen.com/sex/sex_fantasies/most-famous-porn-stars/%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D”>famous porn star that you absent-mindedly watch on the regular. So what kind of stories does a legendary porn director have after all that action? We caught up with Blake to talk about his life, his favorite stars and some of the defining moments in a porn career.

AskMen: How did you get started in porn? What was the defining moment?

Andrew Blake: It was in the mid-1980s. I had decided on a career change. The Playboy Channel was just getting started, so I decided to create a short Video Centerfold for them. They liked it and that began a relationship that resulted in a series for them titled Fantasies. The series featured the Playboy Playmates of that era.

But as I continued to work on these soft-core films, I wanted the girls to do something more with their hands! This led me to approach Caballero Video, a hardcore producer. They gave me a budget to produce my first hardcore film Night Trips. This first effort took the business by storm, won multiple industry awards and made me an instant success. I made several more films for Caballero, then left to produce Video Centerfolds for Penthouse Home Video in the early 1990s.

In 1992 I made my return to hardcore with the creation of my own production company, Studio A Entertainment and the release of the film Hidden Obsessions starring Janine Lindemulder.

You’ve worked with a lot of porn stars — women like Tori Black, Tera Patrick, Sasha Grey, Stoya, Janine Lindemulder, Faye Reagan, Dita von Teese, Alexis Texas. Do you have any favorites?

I have three actually. sex/sex_fantasies/biggest-porn-stars/tori-black.html%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D”>Tori Black for her unbridled sexuality and enthusiasm. She appeared in my films Voyeur Within and Sex Dolls.

The other is the beautiful redhead, Faye Reagan, a favorite because of her knowledge of Sapphic ways and the use of her large puffy nipples to great effect in my film, Paid Companions.

But my all-time favorite would have be Dahlia Grey, who was my muse for close to a decade. She made her first starring appearance in Les Femmes Erotiques, then went on to be a part of Dark Angel, Possessions and several more titles.

How does a great porn star differ from the rest?

They have to have the ability as an actress to express to the viewer that they are comfortable with their sexuality and free with their bodies. This is not as easy to find as it sounds. Of course, I would really like an actress who is also beautiful to look at and can become an “iconic” object of desire.

This is my personal criteria for the ideal porn star: tall, 5’9” or greater, natural breasts around 36C, long, perfect legs, and a beautiful face. No tattoos — or at least discreet ones.

Best/worst/craziest stories from being on set?

We were shooting The Villa in the countryside outside of Rome. On the last day of filming one of my actresses got into an argument with another model and stormed off the set. Now realize, that she spoke no Italian and had no idea of where she was. Somehow she eventually found her way back to the hotel in Rome. She was lucky she didn’t get totally lost! Later at the hotel, she offered no apology. I was not happy about her behavior to say the least.

What are your thoughts on the VR porn movement? Have you/will you shoot VR?

I don’t know enough about sex/sex_fantasies/people-try-virtual-reality-porn-for-the-first-time.html%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D”>VR porn to comment, but probably I won’t be shooting it. I like the viewer to concentrate on what I want them to look at and not be all over the place.

How has directing porn changed since the early ‘90s? Biggest difference in porn between then and now?

Certainly one big difference has been the demise of film in favor of digital video recording. In the 90’s all the major companies shot on film. So now I guess I’ll have to join the digital revolution, because film has become prohibitively expensive.

Of course the manner of content distribution has changed from the release of a title primarily on DVD to the release on the internet. Personally I liked the physical element of the DVD, with the inclusion of the printed box cover art and the inside program notes. One of my favorite parts of post-production was the photography and art direction of the box covers.

I have always thought of my films as items to be collected, much like I still appreciate the value of my many art and photography books.

Who are your current favorite porn stars?

I really liked Stoya when she was performing. sex/sex_fantasies/women-s-favorite-porn-stars/3-alexis-texas.html%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D”>Alexis Texas is another favorite, performing in my film Sex Dolls. She had a curvaceous body and an uninhibited erotic persona.

Has working in porn all these years desensitized you to porn at all?

No, not really. But I am not really attracted to the “crudeness” of today’s porn. I like the direction I took early on, featuring the beauty of women, fashion and architecture. These elements seem to be lost on the majority of the industry with the gang bangs, brutality and “in your face’ approach. I prefer to concentrate on sensuality of the female form and the ambiance of the location.

You work a lot with lesbian porn. According to a PornHub survey, America loves lesbian porn. Why is that?

I think a lot of people love seeing two (or more) beautiful naked girls together, without the inclusion of a dick. The man watching gets to imagine himself in the middle of the scene. I think it’s the ultimate male fantasy. I personally prefer it that way! Plus, a number of the most beautiful industry girls only want to do girl/girl work. Whether it’s because they can remain faithful to their boyfriends that way or they just enjoy being with a woman more, it seems to be a very individual decision.

What have you learned from being a porn director?

I’ve learned that the difference between erotic filmmaking on the level I am working and the mainstream is drawing closer together. Some producers of mainstream movies say that my films are on the production level of Hollywood feature films. Many mainstream movies have also been criticized for being too erotic!
