A dildo from the Stone Age

A dildo from the Stone Age

Anyone who thinks dildos are an invention of the modern age – far from it: the artificial limbs already existed in the Stone Age 28,000 years ago. They are also widespread in Greek antiquity – in the Middle Ages, however, their use is punishable.

A dildo from the Stone Age

Athens women are frustrated. Again and again the bed next to them remains empty. Constantly the men must go to war, which already lasts twenty years. The women decide to resort to their own weapons. They gather on the Acropolis and call for a sex strike: as long as the state of war continues, they want to refuse any man. Love withdrawal, until peace finally reigns.

The comedy “Lysistrata” by the ancient poet Aristophanes from the year 411 BC is not only one of the earliest “Make love, not war” stories from the Peloponnesian Wars, it also contains the first known mention of a sex article, the Today one calls dildo. Because not only the men are gone, even a possible replacement is no longer delivered from the city of Miletus.

Dildo as women comfort in times of war

“Since the Milensians are our enemies, I have not seen a single eight-inch dildo that could be a leather consolation to us women,” outraged the main character Lysistrata. In the Greek port city of Miletus, which had then renounced by the Athenians, the so-called Olisboi (from Greek “glide”) have been produced.

In ancient art you can still see them on drinking vessels today. Naked women, who usually wear only headdress and earrings, hold elongated objects in one or both hands that are clearly reminiscent of male genitalia. Since the women are unclothed, they can only be prostitutes at that time – so-called Hetären – act. Only they were portrayed naked.

“One bought the women to the animation during drinking events”, say the Bonn archaeologist Angelika Dierichs, which researched to the Erotik in the art of Greece. “In lascivious dances, they waved the Olisboi to sexual stimulation.” Only well-disposed men participated in the noise festivals in honor of the god Dionysus. At first there was a dinner, then the men decorated their hair with leaf wreaths and ribbons and settled on cushions and sunbeds, naked or wrapped in a sparse robe. At the so-called symposium, they presented Dionysus with a libation – a lot of wine flowed with water – because at that time wine was only edible. To oboe-like flute sounds occurred in addition to jugglers and hetaeris, which offered a kind of antique sex show with acrobatic contortions and dances.

Extra long artificial limbs

The artificial limbs that they waved are shown oversized on the preserved drinking vessels. “They are as long as a forearm,” says Angelika Dierichs. Thus, they would be neither in the realistic proportion to the user’s body measurements, nor to the length of a limb in the erected state. “This exaggeration is explained by the overvaluation of the male genital in ancient Greece.”

On the occasion of festivities, the people operated a veritable phallus cult. In processions for the fertility god Dionysus, they wore huge phalluses of tree trunks alongside wine, vines and sacrificial animals. For the Haloa festival in honor of the goddesses Demeter and Kore, they erected limbs of clay. It was also common to bake male genitalia from dough and put it on the table. There were drinking vessels and salve oil containers in phallic form. At the walls of the house and the fortifications relief pictures were found, which were supposed to fend off evil.

Whether the normal woman actually used the Olisbos for masturbation, can not be read from the pictures. “With the seclusion imposed on a respectable, married woman at the time, it is unimaginable that she was shown with such a thing,” says Angelika Dierichs.

“The men do not get him so stiff and fat”

There are clearer indications in the literature. The poet Heronda of the island of Kos describes in 250 BC in his Mimiamben a confidential conversation between two women. One, Metro, wants to know where her friend Korrito got her scarlet dildo. Korrito reports on a shoemaker selling the instruments on the black market. Korrito enthuses: “Products are like those of Pallas own hand, the goddess herself, so divine. When I saw them, my eyes fell out. The men do not get him so stiff and fat. As soft as sleep, the straps soft as cotton, not hard leather. There is no such shoemaker who has more understanding for us women. “

In the Middle Ages it still existed. But the church was considered a sin, which did not serve human reproduction. In penitential books she listed all to demonizing sexual varieties. In the 11th century AD, the German bishop Burchard von Worms wrote a penitential punishment for the use of dildos. “It becomes clear that the Bishop of Worms was extremely well informed about the sexual behaviors of the faithful,” writes Rob Meens, a historian at the Institute of History and Culture at the University of Utrecht. He probably had his knowledge from the reports of the faithful who came to him in the confessional. The lists of sins were also a kind of guide for priests who accepted the confession. So he wrote in Latin: “Did you do what some women take care of, namely made any tool or device that resembles a male member? Or have other women fornication with you with the same or another instrument? If you have done so, you must fast for five years on the appointed days. “

Even nuns make use of it

Nevertheless, even nuns have used dildos. Clear evidence was found in 1783 in the Rue Saint-Sauveur in Paris. There stood the house of Madame Gourdan, who ran one of the most famous Paris brothels. Nobles, politicians and clergy drove in the closed carriage in the backyard and entered the establishment so unseen. In addition to the brothel Madame Gourdan also operated a thriving dildo shipment. She had a kind of small factory. The Kunstpenisse were provided with a scrotum and could be filled with a liquid that imitated ejaculation. They were known under the name “consolateur” (French: comforter).

However, after the death of Madame Gourdan, many of the well-off guests flew in, as a list of inventory was drawn up when they cleared their brothel. In addition to a great deal of dildos, there were also numerous correspondence in which nuns also requested the delivery of such a “consolateur”.
